4) The number of spinal fusion surgeries in the US rises to alarming numbers. Study in the Spine journal showed that between 1998 and 2008, the annual number of spinal fusion procedures increased 2.4-fold (137%) from 174,223 to 413,171. The question is why? Increase number of spinal conditions requiring fusion procedures, unsuccessful conservative management of back pain leads to more invasive procedures, or people’s desperation for pain relief?
